COFAX is committed to correcting material errors quickly, clearly and proportionately. Accuracy takes priority over preserving the original wording of a story.
How to request a correction
Use our Contact form and select Correction request. Please include the article URL, the statement you believe is wrong, supporting evidence and your contact details. We review correction requests on their merits whether they come from a named source, a subject of the story or a reader.
What happens next
- We assess the disputed point against our notes, recordings, documents and source material.
- We may contact the person raising the issue and other relevant sources for clarification.
- We aim to acknowledge substantive requests within two working days. Complex reviews may take longer.
- The editor responsible decides what change is required and records the decision.
Types of update
Correction: A factual error that could affect a reader’s understanding is fixed and a dated correction note explains what changed.
Clarification: Wording that was accurate but unclear or incomplete is improved, with a note where the change is material.
Editor’s note: A significant dispute, ethical issue or substantial post-publication development may require a more detailed note at the top or bottom of the article.
Routine update: Spelling, grammar, style, broken links and other changes that do not alter meaning may be fixed without a correction note.
No silent material edits
We do not silently change a material fact. Correction notes state the substance of the error and the accurate information. Article timestamps are updated when a substantive change is made. We do not remove accurate journalism merely because it is inconvenient; deletion is reserved for exceptional legal, safety or ethical reasons.
Appeals
If you disagree with a correction decision, reply to the editorial response with the additional evidence you want reviewed and ask for an editor to reconsider it.
